Palliative care staff under huge strain claims inquiry

under pressureNEW YORK: Nurses and doctors fear they could be held accountable if they gave pain relief that caused the death of an already dying patient, according to experts.

A palliative care director said that although fatal doses were rare, nurses needed clarity to know they would not face repercussions when delivering pain relief to a frail patient.

Her comments were made during the first hearing at an ­inquiry into end-of-life choices.

Earlier, experts revealed doctors also feared they could be held accountable for administering pain medication in some palliative cases…
