ATLANTA: A quarter of the population lives with a disability, yet they remain some of the most marginalised people in society.
There are more than 1 billion people around the world living with some form of disability, with the UN describing the disability community as “the fastest-growing minority in the world”.
Physical impairment was listed as the most common type of disability, followed by sensory impairments such as hearing or vision loss. Mental illness affected 5 per cent of the country’s population, and intellectual disability 2 per cent.
