Seniors housing developers compete for Global Award

NEW YORK: The five hundred and twenty sixth entry for the seniors housing Global Awards for 2015 has been received.

A boomers house in Cairns that blends in with its rainforest location is Queensland’s home of the year.

Planchonella House, named after the tropical rainforest trees that surround it, won the Robin Dods Award for Residential Architecture at the state round of the Australian Institute of Architects Awards announced last night.

The home, designed by Jesse Barrett, has a curved concrete roof, handcrafted timber joinery and floor to ceiling glass and is now in contention for Australian Home of the Year, to be announced in November.

Mr. Barrett spent six months designing the home, which took two years to build. He said the house was designed to be secondary to the landscape.
