Rise in over-60s divorces leaves more dependent on carers

NEW YORK: Growing numbers of older people are being plunged into loneliness by divorce, a report warned.

The rise of so-called ‘silver separation’ means tens of thousands more face a harsh and unhappy old age with early dependency on carers.

Divorce in later years is likely to have ‘negative health and money repercussions’ alongside isolation and a reliance on help from others.

The study warns of the effects of a rapid rise in the numbers of older couples who separate.

While divorce has been going down among the young and middle-aged, among the over-60s it has shot up by 85 per cent since 2000.

It means that at the current rate, by 2037 one in ten of all divorced people will be over 60…
