PHOENIX: Over 50s have regular sex, admit taking recreational drugs and are becoming “the new in-crowd”, according to Mariella Frostrup.
The television presenter, who turned 52 this month, said her generation had undergone a “social revolution”. Yet out-dated stereotypes persist and “ageism remains the last acceptable frontier of discrimination tolerated in almost every walk of life,” she said.
Frostrup shared the results of a survey by High50 magazine, of which she is editor-at-large, that polled people aged 50 to 65.
“Hands over your eyes if you like, but 40 per cent of people over 50 have sex twice or more a week. A quarter have taken recreational drugs. We’re an affluent, active, culturally ravenous bunch,” she said.
“Today, companies may scorn and shed our skills, but soon there will be internships for mature adults returning to the job market. Mark my words, it’s nothing short of a social revolution: the veneration of youth superseded by the fiscal punch of thriving mid-lifers.
