Multigenerational households now represent 20 per cent of population

LOS ANGELES: About 20 per cent of the population live in multigenerational households, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

It can be an informal arrangement where an adult child, their partner and even their children move in with mum and dad for a few months or years to save for a deposit on a property of their own or a more permanent situation, where aging parents move in with their child and young family for health reasons or to stave off moving to a nursing home.

Dr Edgar Liu says the proportion of older people who live in multigenerational households has risen, “There is less of a desire to institutionalize the aged and the numbers of adult children that can’t see themselves putting mum into a home has increased.”

“As a result we are seeing more multigenerational households, where aging parents are living with their adult children and their families.”
