SAN DIEGO: Retirement communities and nursing homes imply a level of elevated safety in their commercial pitch to prospective customers.
But evidence is mounting that age-apartheid compounds are increasingly becoming soft crime targets and the care sector is trashing its reputation by doing nothing to effectively counter the growing threat:
225: A 64-year-old woman was threatened by a man with a knife, bashed and had her car stolen at an aged care facility after she refused to let go of her handbag.
Police say the woman was getting into her grey coloured 2009 Subaru at an aged-care facility, when the man threatened her with a knife, demanding her handbag.
After struggling with the man, the woman fell to the ground and was dragged several metres across the carpark by the offender.
The man kicked the woman as she lay on the ground, taking her car keys after she dropped them.
The woman suffered a broken arm and broken bones in her foot, as well as numerous cuts and bruises as a result of the incident.
