Age care compounds becoming soft crime targets

OKLAHOMA CITY: Retirement communities and skilled nursing homes imply a level of elevated safety in their commercial pitch to prospective customers. But evidence is mounting that age-apartheid compounds are increasingly becoming soft crime targets and the care sector is trashing its reputation by doing nothing to effectively counter the growing threat:

12. A care home rocked by a fire scare had been deemed ‘not safe’ during an official inspection months earlier.

The privately run home with the capacity for 39 elderly people was evacuated on February 16 after an electical fault sparked a fire in a flat at the back of the buildings which spread to the roof.

Twenty-eight people, many elderly residents, were led to safety amid large plumes of smoke.
