THOUSAND OAKS: The walls may not be covered in ivy, but the residents are reliving their student days via a collaborative effort between a retirement community and a university.
The university program is the brainchild of a resident at the village.
Although many universities offer classes that are open to seniors on their campuses, this program is the first of its kind to hold the same class found in a university course catalog at a retirement community.
“People in our age group want to continue learning, but meeting two or three times a week on campus in a college classroom is a little overwhelming…Universities are generally geared toward much younger students and campuses are not that accessible for older folks. The idea grew out of numerous discussions with staff. The classes are held in a small, classroom environment with no more than 40 students per class to keep the experience as intimate and interactive as possible.”…
