Reading aloud can build up brains

brains_19HOUSTON: Reading aloud to young children improves their brain function, new research shows.

Researchers who used magnetic resonance imaging to scan the brains of three to five-year-olds while they listened to a story found it activated areas of the brain that support mental imagery and narrative comprehension.

The researchers said parents had long been encouraged to read to children to foster early learning and help build language connections, but the study provided the first direct evidence that it affected the brain.
