Over 90s increasingly pursuing active life on the road

PHILADELPHIA: Hostels aren’t known as places for senior citizens to hang out, but that has never stopped two 93-year-olds from staying at the Northern Greenhouse backpackers hostel in Cairns.

Every year for the past 30 years, John and Hilda Fraser have made their way north from their small hometown Donald in Victoria to escape winter and relax in Cairns.

When they do, they like to stay at the hostel.

“It’s a great location – you are right in the middle of everything,” Mr Fraser said.

The Frasers first visited Cairns 45 years ago.

Now they return every year at the start of June and stay until the end of July.
