$2.5 billion R&D commitment to Alzheimer’s research

PHILADELPHIA: At World Medical Innovation Forum in Boston, Biogen CEO George Scangos said that the company has decided to commit $2.5 billion to develop the drug for Alzheimer’s. This amount is inclusive of the R&D through 2 phase III trials and new manufacturing facility in order to get approval from regulators.

Biogen plans to run 2 phase III trials later this year, on 2,700 to 2,800 patients. Biogen will ensure that it picks the right patients so that the effect of the drug can be correctly recorded and analyzed. The name of the drug is Aducanumab (BIIB037).
