yellowfin_tuna_ NEW YORK: A tuna sandwich once a week in old age can stave off dementia, say scientists.

A study of almost 1,000 people in their 80s found those who included fish as part of their regular diet had better memories than those who didn’t.

Seafood is the best source of omega-3 fatty acids – nutrients that boost the brain. Others include rapeseed and flaxseed oil, peanuts, walnuts and leafy green vegetables.

Previous research has shown the importance of seafood and omega-3 fatty acids in preventing dementia but this is the first to examine the links with specific types of cognitive ability.

It found fish helps people remember verbal information in particular as well as identify errors or mistakes more quickly – which can be vital for the elderly.

Furthermore the protective effect was strongest among individuals with the gene mutation APOE which makes carriers more susceptible to Alzheimer’s. This gene carries cholesterol to neurons…
