Pair sentenced in ‘landmark’ social housing fraud case

scales-of-justiceNEW YORK: A man who illegally sub-let his property has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to fraud – alongside the woman who rented the apartment from him.

He has received a nine-month suspended sentence plus 140 hours unpaid work while she was given a 10-month suspended sentence and ordered to undertake 150 hours unpaid work. A confiscation hearing will be set for later this year.

This is believed to be the first time that a case has come to trial where a local authority has not only successfully prosecuted the tenant but also their subtenant.

The court was told that they claimed to be in a relationship in order to disguise the fact that the property was being sublet…
