‘Nod pods’ response to over 65s staying in workforce

Alarm-clock-007HOUSTON: Mahil Mohamed gets enough sleep, but the project manager has a stressful job and a busy life.

So, a few afternoons a week, he does something most overloaded city workers probably want to do: he takes a nap.

“I sleep for a minimum of 20 minutes, and maximum of 40,” says the 54-year-old, who pops into a gym to jump into a sleep pod for a kip.

The pods, which have appeared in workplaces such as Google and Procter & Gamble in recent years, aren’t cheap.

And they have fuelled fears a 24-hour work culture is winning out over the most basic of human needs, sleep.

The pods should be available everywhere, he says, in workplaces particularly, where they ought be viewed like a coffee or tea break.

One university put “energy pods” in one of its libraries, while elsewhere schools with less money are opting for far less expensive options: nap rooms with beds.

The duration of the nap is important, as any sleep longer than 20 minutes or so might leave the sleeper groggy when they wake…
