DALLAS: Night shift workers who have trouble sleeping could be at greater risk of Alzheimer’s disease, research suggests.
Scientists found evidence that disruptions to the body clock, which make you feel “jet lagged”, may trigger memory loss.
Experiments on mice found shortening their dark hours at night made them less able to work out a maze.
They also had reduced levels of brain antioxidant glutathione – an emerging factor in research into the causes of Alzheimer’s.
Working night shifts has previously been linked to immune system damage, raising the risk of various diseases including Alzheimer’s. Past research has also found chronic lack of sleep can lead to loss of brain cells….
