CHICAGO: In one of the largest and longest studies of its kind, researchers examined whether supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids helped to slow cognitive decline in older patients.
Researchers were quick to point out that the study only looked at the impact of supplements, not foods high in omega-3 fatty acids. A large 2011 study found that omega-3 supplements did not improve the brain health of older patients with pre-existing heart disease, she said.
Researchers in the study gave the participants either a placebo, omega-3, nutrients found in green and leafy vegetables, or a combination of omega-3 and the nutrients.
“Some studies have linked higher omega-3 intake with a lower risk of dementia, but current evidence does not suggest any benefit of taking omega-3 supplements on cognition”.
