WASHINGTON, D.C.: This condition is little-known, even among the medical profession, but the silent hallucinations triggered by the brain ‘filling in the blanks’ in diminished eyesight can range from disturbing to terrifying. Fearing that they are part of dementia, far too few sufferers confide in anyone but live in frightened silence, plagued by images of all sorts – patterns or words covering everything, animals, insects, goblin-like creatures, people large and small, dressed in costume, or the whole room morphing into somewhere completely different.
