Council considers making space for multigenerational marina apartments

marinaLOS ANGELES: Fancy sitting on your deck, enjoying a cold beer, and watching yachts sail out from the Seaview Marina?

That’s not an impossibility if the city council-owned company running the Seaview Marina gets its way.

Marina manager Alan McLellan last week told councillors on the finance committee that although it would require a lot of work, it was a major opportunity.

“It will not happen tomorrow or in the next five years but it is the sort of exciting thing we could see.”

As well as apartments on marina land, he suggested the site would be suitable for floating apartments.

Cr Michael Lulich was one of a number of people at the meeting who liked the idea.

“Put me down for one of those floating apartments, please,” he said.

Planner Andrew Cummings said neighbours would get a chance to have a say during any District Plan change hearings, which he said would be complex.

The current plan restricted what could be done at the marina. Retailing, for instance, must have a nautical theme.

The marina management wanted to change the plan to allow a broader range of activities including retailing, cafes and apartments.

If the proposed plan changes go ahead, the marina will remain under the control of the city council.

McLellan said the proposed changes were important to the future development of the marina.

“This is very much about enhancing the marine aspect of this area – looking after our existing boaties and other users by enhancing the functions of the marina is a priority. We are also exploring possibilities for future development”…
