Canadian study identifies progression of dementia

dementia progressWASHINGTON, D.C.: Scientists in Canada have recently announced progress made towards better identifying and explaining how changes in the brain progress from mild cognitive impairment to full Alzheimer’s Disease-type dementia.

Perhaps the most important aspect of this discovery is the fact that they found cognitive decline does not occur in a linear fashion. Indeed, they have learned that the path towards full dementia is quite complex and is often characterised by periods of stability which are then followed by decline at an accelerated rate; and typically this stability-acceleration period occurs between one and two years before diagnosis.
