Seniors housing developers compete for Global Award

NEW YORK: The two hundred and ninety-eighth entry for the seniors housing Global Award for 2015 has been received.

According to Rwanda Housing Authority (RHA) low cost housing for its citizens is a priority in 2015.

Esther Mutamba, director general of RHA said that the country was focused on putting in place decent and affordable housing units.

The Office of the Prime Minister has established an inter-ministerial steering committee, to come up with strategies and guidelines for planned and affordable housing.

RHA has acquired prime land in Kicukiro District, in the Kigali City Suburbs for the establishment of more than 2,000 affordable dwelling units. The site will accommodate between 70 to 100 high-density low rise apartment blocks per hectare.

Each of the house will cost buyers between 21,897 U.S. dollars (Rwf15 million) to 43,795 U.S. dollars (Rwf30million). According to the City of Kigali authorities, the total demand for new housing units in the country’s Capital Kigali is likely to hit 344,068 units by 2022.

The Rwandan government has signed an agreement with the Ethiopian government in Addis Ababa on sharing experiences and policies in urban housing development.
