Western skilled nursing home investors making mistake in China

BOSTON: Healthcare investors, piling pell-mell into the Chinese skilled nursing home market, will end up losing the lot.

Over 96 per cent of elderly Chinese said they prefer home-based care to living in a skilled nursing home, according to a recent survey by the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress.

And the Beijing Bureau of Civil Affairs announced in 2009 its 9064 Project in which, by the year 2020, 90 per cent of seniors will receive care at home, 6 per cent through community-based centres and 4 per cent through professional institutes, will militate against purpose-built skilled nursing homes.

Beijing now plans to promote home care services for senior residents through drafting a specific law and nurturing a preferential market for companies to provide a visiting service.

The home care services draft for senior residents, the country’s first specific regional law on this basic model for the elderly, will be reviewed by the municipal legislature in January 2015…
