SEATTLE: The extra care housing concept will not survive generational change. The concept of herding people by age into a ‘corralled catchment’ for their own benefit, will not be a saleable commodity to the boomer generation.
The concept, often grandly termed as the ‘Not for Profit model in mixed tenure housing for seniors with care services’, or ‘the Enriched Opportunities Program’, is a form of geriatric colonialism.
It is a manifestation of intellectual arrogance to assume you know what is best for people, and then set about herding them into a same-age compound.
It is even more reprehensible when you conspire with councils to knock down existing housing estates, and then offer your own idea of the ideal living ghetto to rehouse the same people.
But the ultimate insult, is to then wander around the world hot-gospeling the practice as a social success…
