Seniors housing developers compete for Global Award

trophyNEW YORK: The one hundred and ninetieth entry for the seniors housing Global Awards 2016 has been received.

The team responsible for redeveloping Macquarie Point has pushed back against a call to build affordable housing at the old rail yards site.

Shelter Tas has appeared before a Tasmanian Planning Commission panel, arguing in support of Hobart City Council amendments that would make it clear that affordable housing had a legitimate place in the development.

Shelter Tas executive officer Pattie Chugg said the purpose of the Hobart City Council amendments, which were ticked off by council aldermen in December, was not mandate but to facilitate the provision of affordable housing.

“Shelter supports these amendments as it will make it clear to all stakeholders that affordable housing can have a legitimate place in this development,” she said.

“They signal to potential developers and potential objectors that there is opportunity for affordable dwellings to be provided at Macquarie Point, and that affordable housing is consistent with the overall vision for the site.
