Age care compounds becoming soft crime targets

crime DALLAS: Retirement communities and skilled nursing homes imply a level of elevated safety in their commercial pitch to prospective customers.

But evidence is mounting that age-apartheid compounds are increasingly becoming soft crime targets and the care sector is trashing its reputation by doing nothing to effectively counter the growing threat.

731: Jon Michael Harder, the former CEO of Sunwest Management, surrendered himself Thursday to the Bureau of Prisons and began his 15-year sentence at a federal facility in California.

Harder, of North Dakota and formerly of Salem, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of mail fraud and money laundering for his role in a multimillion-dollar, nationwide investor fraud scheme while he was at the helm of Salem-based Sunwest Management and its affiliated companies.

Before its collapse in 2008, Sunwest Management had approximately 300 senior housing and assisted living facilities serving more than 15,000 residents.
