LOS ANGELES: In a study, certain common drugs were linked to an increased risk of developing some form of dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease.
The study found that common drugs such as the following are tied to increased incidence of dementia over time:
- Diphenhydramine – the active ingredient in Benadryl and many other drugs for allergy and cold symptoms as well as in Sominex and many other brands of sleep aids
- Chlorpheniramine – used for allergy symptoms such as the brand Chlor-Trimeton and many other brands
- Oxybutynin – a prescription drug used for overactive bladder conditions
- Doxepin – a drug used in some antidepressants such as brand Sinequan
