Real estate executive to face trial over retirement apartment Ponzi scheme

gavelNEW YORK: A man is about to stand trial on 11 counts of fraud stemming from accusations that his retirement apartments investment scheme morphed into a Ponzi scheme under his direction.

He is arguing he was a victim of the economic collapse that engulfed the real estate market. The prosecutors believe otherwise.

If convicted, he faces a maximum of 220 years in prison, plus fines of double the estimated gross losses suffered by investors and banks.
