MILWAUKEE: Architects are in danger of re-creating a fortress mentality in their attempt to build better security into seniors housing compounds.
Whilst high perimeter walls and fences are being replaced by ‘secure’ landscape design large ponds, low garden walls with bench seating, and differences in elevation that create natural, unobtrusive barriers, the anti-homeless spikes, mosquito alarms, sloped bus shelter seats, park benches you cannot lie down on, and anti-social street furniture are all seen as ‘exclusionary’ as barb-wire fence settings…
